The Reference Map
Laguna Seca is an 11-turn, 2.238-mile circuit characterized by severe elevation changes and low-grip corner exits. This guide provides the baseline execution plan.
Turn 2 - The Andretti Hairpin
A deceptive, double-apex left-hander. It requires hard braking downhill, which easily unloads the rear tires.
- Braking Checkpoint: 3 or 4 board, depending on aero and tire compound.
- Execution: Patient turn-in. Let the car roll to the first apex curbing, but do not pinch it. Look far right toward the exit. The track drops away on exit, inviting power-on oversteer.
Turn 4 - The Fast Right
A momentum corner that directly feeds the short chute into Turn 5.
- Braking Checkpoint: Just past the 2 board. Light, brush braking mostly to settle the nose.
- Execution: Use the dirt patch on the left (on entry) as your wide turn-in point. Carry high minimum speed to the apex curbing on the right. Track completely out to the left exit curbing.
Turn 6 - The Uphill Commitment
The most critical corner on the track for lap time, as it dictates your speed all the way up the Rahal Straight to the Corkscrew.
- Braking Checkpoint: Under the walking bridge.
- Execution: The braking requires extreme patience. Brake in a straight line, but do not turn in early. Wait until you see the apex curbing. The track compresses heavily at the apex, allowing you to carry massive grip and speed—if you turned in late enough.
Turns 8 & 8A - The Corkscrew
The iconic blind drop. It falls 59 feet in just 450 feet of track length.
- Braking Checkpoint: Over the crest, starting right around the 3 board.
- Execution: Crucially, finish your heavy braking in a straight line before the track drops. Turn into the 8 (left) apex aiming centrally over the crest. Look for the oak tree at the bottom of the hill to align the car for the 8A (right) compression. Do not fight the car as it gets light; let gravity pull it into the compression.
Turn 11 - The Setup for the Straight
A notoriously slippery 90-degree left-hander.
- Execution: 100% focused on corner exit speed. Over-slowing is safer than over-shooting. Late apex and apply smooth, progressive throttle as the car tracks out to the right wall on the main straight.
